Born February 11, 1963 the youngest of 11 children to Wilbert Bennett, a truck driver and Susie Bennett, a housewife both loving parents who instilled a desire and commitment toward God, Community and Family. After attending Murray-Wright High School I graduated from Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan University with both a Bachelor of Public Affairs and a Master of Public Administration.
My parents instilled in me a work ethic and a passion for truth and an admiration for principled leaders. I joined the police department so that I could remain in the city and community I love and give back to a city that's given me so much. I was disappointed to discover the lack of transparency in the police department. In 2002 I started a website called firejerryo to expose corruption. Over a period of years that site morphed into Detroituncovered which it remains today still uncovering fraud, waste, mismanagement and the lack of transparency in government. My fight for what Detroiter's so richly deserve, good government, cost me my job at one point for almost 5 years. Eventually I returned to the work I love .
During my career I've been honored with commendations for outstanding performance. On one occasion myself and my partner recovered an assault rifle on a traffic stop.
The transparency I seek as a police officer is the transparency I will fight for as a City Councilperson. Honesty, integrity and respect have to become hallmarks of Detroit city government and leaders must lead righteously. If Detroit is ever to be a great city again people must feel safe in their homes and trust their government.
The basis of what I stand for and have fought for will be the standard I will set as your councilperson.
My greatest joy was co-founding the Trustfaith Foundation. Trustfaith gives me a platform to serve as a sort of lobbyist for young men and women. I speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.
My compassion and commitment to the city of Detroit and the people of Detroit are not just words, its a way of life. As a councilperson I will carry to the table each day that way of life.
