Born February 11, 1963 the youngest of 11 children to Wilbert Bennett, a truck driver and Susie Bennett, a housewife both loving parents who instilled a desire and commitment toward God, Community and Family. After attending Murray-Wright High School John Bennett graduated from Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan University with both a Bachelor of Public Affairs and a Master of Public Administration.
In October 1995 John Bennett organized and drove a caravan of blackmen to Washington, D.C. to take part in the Million Man March.
In 1996 John Bennett joined the Detroit Police Department and served the citizens of Detroit for several years as a patrol officer and received several commendations for outstanding performance.
In November 2002 John Bennett became a catalyst for informed debate when he organized an effort to remove then Police Chief Jerry Oliver from head of the Detroit Police Department which started an organized movement via the Internet to inform and educate the community on leadership in government. He used his own resources to keep Detroiters informed about their government and in the process exposed corruption. After Jerry Oliver left John Bennett was inspired and empowered by the people to continue to uncover ineffective government which he still does today. John Bennett was recognized for his efforts through many newspaper stories and an award for best local political blog.
In November 2006 John Bennett married Chiquita McKenzie-Bennett and together they co-founded the TrustFaith Foundation, Inc to provide resources for youth and young people to get on their feet and the tools to remain there. John Bennett has been a mentor for many youth over 20 years, including raising his nephew who is a successful investment banker. John Bennett has shown the courage and conviction and the willingness to sacrifice and see the City of Detroit and it's people prosper. He is a public policy maker and a student of government and over the years he's watched city government fail to work on behalf of its citizens and it is for that reason that he has decided its time for him to lead. He's battle tested and ready.
John Bennett is a member of the Michigan Democratic Party, the NAACP, Eastern Michigan's Black Alumni and the Museum of African -American History.
